In the mid 80's I started a T Shirt printing business with an Art School lecturer in screen printing and a graduate designer. I was the sales end of the trio.

A few weeks into the new venture I came back thrilled with an order for 5000 printed T Shirts for a retailer in Bournemouth who regularly sold at least twice this quantity to tourists every year. It was a great order and future prospects with the customer were very good.

We duly printed 5000 T Shirts by hand with a "stunning" design showing the pier, beaches and palm trees and the logo "Bournemuoth 1987".

I had a phone call later that day from the customer who had been the first to spot the "deliberate mistake". We had printed the "O" and the "U" the wrong way round!

The T Shirts were returned and fortunately we were able to salvage something from the disaster by individually overprinting each T Shirt with a Seagull neatly flying between the two letters so that they appeared to be the right way round, but funnily enough we never heard from the customer again.

Glorious! Although many inhabitants of said town, being what we London types call 'provincial', never may have noticed the typo!
This tale reminds me of the time when a few of us chaps had to design a t-shirt for our college, Bristol Vet School. We spelled it: 'Bristol Vetinary School'. How we howled.
