It was in 1990 in Japan after I had been there for about two years. We had been fond of taking walks near the beach at Taitokaihinshokobutsugunrakuchi (that will give the Welsh something to think about

in Chiba as a family. I recall it well, because it was Halloween. A surfing shop had just closed down that day and as we walked past we were greeted in English by a group of people milling around. The people invited us to a Halloween party, which was fun and when we left, the gentleman whose shop it had been gave us a calling card bearing the slogan "The Big Wednesday Club." A few months later, a friend from England came to visit, but being out in the Japanese countryside, I could think of little in terms of nightlife. Then it came to me, The Big Wednesday Club! The chap had sounded very sincere that we should visit. My friend and I got a taxi to a large, modern, expensive house. All was quiet, but our host was there. "Hi!" I said on arrival. "We're here to sample the nightlife!" Our host looked really puzzled. It transpired that the "The Big Wednesday Club" was a title for an Amway circle. We ended up being treated to a demonstration of the power of 'Liquid Organic Cleaner'. Still, we could all at least see the funny side of it.
